Sills & Smith
About:
Sills & Smith, fronted by Ottawa singer-songwriters Jeremy Sills and Frank Smith, has independently released six full-length, critically acclaimed studio albums of original music (91 songs) that boldly blends and bends elements of folk, indie rock, progressive rock, with hints of blues and jazz. The band's first three studio albums Uncertain Vista (2011); No Way In, No Way Out (2012) and The Glorious Ache (2013) were recorded and produced by Jonathan Edwards at Corvidae Music. Subsequent studio releases Etched (2014), Echoes In Time (2016) and the most recent album Maps - Burned or Lost (2018) were recorded and produced by Phillip Victor Bova at Bova Sound, with many talented session players contributing to the music. Photography and design for each Sills & Smith album is the art of Grace Smith who created the digipak, CD editions. There are 24 music videos on the band's YouTube channel, some are original short films (including three animated videos) and other videos use images under license, to tell the stories of the songs in visual media. Music videos to go with the songs of Sills & Smith have been created for the band by talented artists in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Praise for Sills & Smith:
Maps - Burned or Lost, Editor's Pick - The Spill Magazine (9/10)
“Maps – Burned or Lost is the sixth studio album from Sills & Smith. And although they have produced some mighty fine music in the past, they knock it out of the park with this one. Not so much a concept album, but a thematic album, musically and lyrically. Here is an album to sit down, grab a cup of tea, get comfortable, turn off all distractions and just listen to. It is an album that does not demand that you listen, but Maps – Burned or Lost is an album to which you should give your undivided attention.” (Aaron Badgley, The Spill Magazine)
“If you've not yet been introduced to Sills & Smith, a Canadian duo that has released six albums since 2011, it'll be worth the effort to seek out Maps - Burned or Lost. Not only will this record answer what the late Warren Zevon would sound like in a contemporary progressive pop setting, but it also serves as a gleaming example of the do-it-yourself ethos in today's independent music scene.” (Michael Popke - Progression Magazine) (Print edition)
“Frank Smith and Jeremy Sills have delivered their most profound musical work yet, ‘Maps – Burned or Lost’ is a wonderfully involving collection of songs about love, life and loss that is very relevant in this turbulent world we live in today. You can lose yourself in the well wrought words and the excellent music and come out of the other side in a much better place than you started and that’s what I want from my music.” (Martin Huchinson, Progradar)
“Pushing themselves to new frontiers sonically on their sixth album, Sills & Smith have brought their finest release yet. Assuming you can lean into the album's overtly cutting lyrics, their ominous storytelling will have you hooked. "On The Edge" is certainly on the nose with its political criticism, luckily however this works in the dark rock groove they set it all in.” (Owen Maxwell, Ottawa Life Magazine)
“Sills & Smith chose the first day of the first month of 2018 to release their much-anticipated sixth studio album called Maps — Burned or Lost. The duo, which is composed of Ottawa singer-songwriters Jeremy Sills and Frank Smith, have spent the last few years getting together material for the new album, which spans an impressive 70 minutes over fourteen tracks.” (Matías Muñoz - Ottawa Showbox)
“Although Sills & Smith have often been described as prog rock enthusiasts, the band take their sweet time on Maps – Burned or Lost, assuring that a cornucopia of sounds and genres are represented while simultaneously matching the sensibilities of these accomplished musicians impeccably.” (Daniel Sylvester, Exclaim)
“The musical capabilities of Sills & Smith are such that ‘Echoes In Time’ isn’t just a really good album, it is a great one and one that I must heartily recommend to any lover of great music and excellent songwriting.” (Martin Hutchinson. Progradar)
“No matter where Sills & Smith travel on Echoes in Time, though, the duo always hover around that same mid-'70s arena rock era, oftentimes stripping some of the "progressive" out of their brand of prog rock. Overall, Sills & Smith come off as seasoned and focused songwriters and distinguished instrumentalists on Echoes in Time. (Independent) - Get It” (Daniel Sylvester, Exclaim)
“Sills & Smith are an alternative rock band based out of Ottawa who released their fourth full-length record, Etched, in August 2014. If you like intelligent, folk-influenced alternative rock in the vein of The Tragically Hip, then the 13 eclectic tracks that make up Etched will be a perfect fit for you.” (Lisa Fiorilli, Confront Magazine)
“I've been listening to these guys since 2012's No Way Out, No Way In, and I still can't figure out which one sounds like Warren Zevon. But the world-weariness of his voice brings additional authenticity. Taken collectively, these songs make Echoes in Time Sills & Smith's best album yet.” (Michael Popke, Sea of Tranquility)
"Sills and Smith have made Etched an obvious labour of love, and this effort permeates the entire album." (Tristin Norenberg-Goodmanson - Earshot, The National Campus Community Radio Report)
“This Ottawa band is growing by leaps and bounds with each new song. Living On An Island - Sounds like: A plea.” (Larry Lootsteen. Alan Cross - A Journal of Musical Things)
